Centro Citibanamex, Mexico City, Mexico
At Zona Maco 2025, JO-HS Gallery is pleased to present an evocative collection showcasing four artists: Rodrigo Echeverría, Floria Gonzalez, Chavis Mármol, and Kitty Rice. The exhibition explores themes of transformation, freedom, and the interplay between past and present.
Rodrigo Echeverría’s Sarcófagos invites viewers into a reimagined narrative surrounding death and the politics of visibility. Drawing from ancient Egyptian culture, the artist explores mummification and sarcophagi as metaphors for lost freedoms and bodies marginalized in history. Through powerful imagery and material contrasts, Echeverría challenges the boundaries between fragility and permanence, probing what it means to be seen—and unseen—in the context of the body and beyond.
Floria Gonzalez’s works delve into renewal, rebirth, and the tension between the ancient and the contemporary. In It is not Summer but it is Gloomy and Go Out with Fire, Gonzalez draws on the symbolism of fire and destruction to depict transformation amidst societal and ecological chaos. Her use of historical and mythological references underscores the cyclical nature of destruction and creation, while reflecting on modern anxieties such as climate change and political upheaval.
Chavis Mármol’s Las perlas deberían de ser eternas explores themes of love, jealousy, and identity through a deeply personal narrative. The story of two twins locked in a tragic rivalry of desire and separation becomes a metaphor for the complex ties that bind us to our past and ourselves. Mármol’s work examines how trauma, longing, and familial bonds shape our understanding of freedom and identity.
Kitty Rice’s An Ecstatic History draws from the Dionysian traditions of intoxication, freedom, and chaos, blending art history with mythological references. Rice’s exploration of the duality of the human experience—order versus chaos—invites the viewer into a trance-like celebration of human freedom, embodied in a vibrant and sensual aesthetic that evokes both personal liberation and universal unity.
Together, these artists create a multifaceted dialogue on the intersection of personal and collective histories, inviting viewers to reconsider notions of freedom, transformation, and the invisible forces that shape our lives.
